I ll do the Knunu files first since to do the data files I have to change the common.inc file to common-data.inc (or something like that) I created .pat files for bpbm runs 1to3 and run 4, after adding the cut on ptrkleft.gt.1.35. ($23.gt.1.35) This means the .pat files have had the cuts ntrkleft.le.3 emissevent.gt.2.5 ngooddl.gt.0 and pstarlep.gt.1.35. The files are in the output directory above called bpbm4.pat and bpbm1to3.pat I then created hbook files to compare the variables and they re on the mercury system at /bipulcoderun1to4/hbooks/bpbm1to3.hbook and bpbm4.hbook I ve also started a file to automatically make the pictures of the bpbm comparison. Steve responded to my email about doubletag agreement, he only looked at the KPi mode (and crosschecked with K3Pi?) So the discrepancy is understandable (why he has less events, but better agreement). I finished the comparison between bpbm runs 1,2,3 (skimmed by ilya) versus 4 (skimmed by bipul). It s located here. Today I passworded the page. Also I started looking at the files for variables that aren t on the list of 37. By looking at B+B files for runs 2 and 4 (1 of each) I ve cleared: Testevt.f, writableIndex.f, finalCuts.f, testk.f, nt1.f, passother.f, gammaClean.f, d0mode.f, skimnt_rwn.f, testall.f, bestdl.f Possible discrepancy between thetalabifr, and a few others (but just differences in layout, possibly differences in settings of the run numbers) in in passother.f NMC is different for run5 I recall, but I don t think this matters much I don t claim that I ve caught all discrepancies, but I at least look for them. I don t know where to look for bipul s old version of the code that caused all the problems. Today I have made the train, valid, and test files that contain all of the MC (both background and Knunu MC), with the appropriate weights as calculated here. Now I m going to run the stat pattern bump hunter code to get a set of cuts. The train, test, and valid files are at mercury at ~davidd/bipulcoderun1to4/output/trainreweighted.pat etc. The  w parameter is calculated as: The  w parameter is 0.0003152 The  P parameter is 2 01/29/07 I ve remade all of the commands to run the bump hunter, they can be found at slac at ~davidd/sprknunu/workdir/commandbipulexplorec9v1 etc. Also I have the same, but with decision instead of explore. I need to look in SigFOMdecision.txt or SigFOMexplore.txt. I would then look at weightsbipuldecision.txt etc. I m continuing with the second set of Punzi cuts, because there are less of them, and they re more understandable. Because I m seeing less signal efficiency, I made sure that removing the cut on njp didn t somehow reduce the number of output events after the 2nd level skim. It seems that the number of events out after removing the cut match the number of events out with the cut. This makes me think that njp is 0 for all Knunu MC. These are the variables that are cut on within the code, but aren t saved as bipul s 37. I want to compare between the first-order ntuples bipul made versus those that ilya made. -Make sure Jack indeed did have a njp cut within his analysis. If he didn t then we can still compare his cuts in runs 1 through 4. If he did, then we can only compare with his runs 1 and 2 results. (here) -Calculate his FOM for runs 1 and 2 based on the reported results. Compare this to our cuts FOM for runs 1 and 2 to make sure we have an improvement. (here) -If everything above checks out, we should redo the sideband study -Finish up the doubletag code. Jack did have a cut on njp=0 in BAD 293, pg. 15 Oh well& . I ve produced plots of the signal/background distributions of the MC for the variables we will be cutting on. To see how the distributions look for the full sets of signal/background MC, look at the distributions here. For a sequential application of cuts, look here. The signal MC is in green, the background is in red, with all distributions normalized to 1 in each plot. To compare the Punzi FOM for Jack s quoted results, and our data, I first calculated the Punzi FOM using Jack s quoted results, which can be seen here. His FOM is 0.0958. For Runs 1 through 4, using the cuts we ve agreed upon (here), our FOM is 0.1461 +/- 0.018, with a raw event count of 1251 signal MC, 6 B+B MC, 3 B0B0 MC, and 3 CC MC in the test data set. For Runs 1 and 2, the FOM using the same cuts is 0.105 +/- 0.016(with a raw event count of 556 signal MC, 2B+B MC, and 1 B0B0 MC in the test sample), which we see is better than Jack s results, but a big discrepancy from runs 1 through 4. After looking at the distributions of signal/background for all of the cuts (above), I decided to try to remove the cut on cosdlk, since it didn t look to be a really powerful variable. If I remove this cut from my calculations of the FOM, I find that in runs 1 through 4, the FOM improves to 0.155 +/- 0.019 with 1550 signal MC, 6 B+B-, 3B0B0, 5 CC, and 1 UDS. For runs 1 and 2, the FOM becomes 0.132 +/- 0.019 with 697 Signal MC, 2 B+B-, and 1 B0B0. The number of signal MC in the test sample went up for runs 1 and 2 when I remove the cut on cosdlk, but the background stayed the same. Also we see better agreement between runs 1 and 2, and runs 1 through 4 with this cut removed. Today I made a preliminary sideband study. To do this I first had to make hbook files for the data skimmed, these can be found on mercury at: ~/bipulcoderun1to4/hbooks/datatrain.hbook   datavalid.hbook   datatest.hbook The two and three sideband results can be seen here. Today I prepared the table ilya had asked me to make. It can be found here. To do list for today: Get Etotleft Reweighing factor (here) Do Sideband Study (here) Give Ilya ascii files with and without the Etotleft reweighing factor applied Finish Doubletag code (here) Today I decided I d try to figure out what the d0mass sideband is. I m going to use the same value as bipul did, which I believe is 3 sigma sideband (so 3 sigma above the mean value for each specific mode, and 3 sigma below) This means the D0mass sideband is identified as: Modenum=3, abs(d0mass-1.863).gt.0.0391 Modenum=2, abs(d0mass-1.863).gt.0.0159 Modenum=1, abs(d0mass-1.863).gt.0.0191 I ve started a kumac to make this calculation of the reweighing factor called: etotleftreweighting.kumac I have calculated the values of the reweighing factors. They may be found here. There are 30 bins between Etotleft= 0 to 3 The new, reweighed files, may be found at ~davidd/bipulcoderun1to4/output/trainetotleftfix.pat ~davidd/bipulcoderun1to4/output/validetotleftfix.pat ~davidd/bipulcoderun1to4/output/testetotleftfix.pat To further develop the sideband studies, I ve produced special ascii files that have the identifying cut on them, so they correspond to (these have knunu MC removed from them): Testd0masssideband.pat is the d0mass sideband detailed in yesterday s blog Similarely are validd0masssideband.pat, and traind0masssideband.pat. These already have the etotleft reweighing factor in them as detailed above. The comparison between MC and data for the 30+ variables in bipul s sample can be seen in picture format here. The signal is in green, and the MC is in red. Today I produced the first example of a double tag study. I applied the cuts to isolate the double tag sample to the Data set for runs 1 through 4. These cuts can be seen in the file on mercury at: ~/david_new_double/cut_doubletag. This cut has a cut on pstarlep.gt.1.35, pstarlep2.gt.1.35, ntrkleft.eq.0, cosby and cosby2 cuts, and d0mass and d0mass2 cuts. The variables with a 2 on the end are meant to reflect that the cut was applied to the second tag side. The hbook file with the variable results can be found at ~/david_new_doubletag/hbooks/doubletag.hbook Tomorrow I ll plot the variables, but I know some are wrong, and the variable etotleft is absent entirely. I produced plots of the 37 variables between data and MC. Some of them don t look right because I had the wrong .inc file for data when I skimmed the data. I m reproducing the data files with the proper .inc file (need to change common.inc, the form of this file for data is common.data.inc and for MC it s common.mc.inc) I need to check for discrepancy between data and MC for the double tag study (make sure the 37 variables look the same in both) I need to fix variables so that they match the knunu MC My submissions to the uvic batch system didn t work, so I m trying again to remake the data files with the proper .inc file. The first (erroneous) skim is in output/double_v1 The knunu hbook file is in hbooks/knunu.pat, the MC file (made exclusively from b+b MC) is in hbooks/mcdoublev1 I ve produced a second round of mc and data skims for the double tag. After all the double-tag isolating cuts have been applied, the hbook files can be found at ~/david_new_double/hbooks/datadoublev2.hbook And ~/david_new_double/hbooks/mcdoublev2.hbook For actual number comparison, the B+B MC predicts 2541 double tag events, the data has 3235 events (the B+B MC predicts 78.5% of the data double tag events. For BAD 293, the B+B MC predicted 81.5% of the data double tag events {603 B+B MC, versus 740 data double tags}) I ve produced pictures (using the file makepictures_doublevariables_mcvsdatav2.kumac) comparing the data to the weighted MC, which may be found here. I ve also produced pictures with this second data skim comparing it to the knunu MC, using the kumac: makepictures_doublevariablesv2.kumac These pictures may be found here. I m going to categorize the variables as good, bad, marginal, or look to get rid of: Good: Cosangkd (angle between kaon and d) Cosdkl (angle between topdl and kaon) Cosmomdl (angle of the dl momentum) Costhdl ( D0Mass (this is the mass of the d0 candidate) DMass (this is the mass of the dhadron candidate) Nkl (I believe this is the number of klongs in the event) Ntrkleft (this is the number of charged tracks left after removing the tag side tracks) Pstarlep (this is the CM frame momentum of the lepton) Sumptdl (I believe this is the sum of the transverse momentum in the tag side of the event) Thdl Thetalab (this the lab frame theta of the final charged track in the event) Bad: Cosangkl (this is the angle between the kaon and the lepton) Cosby (I believe this is the angle between the B and the DL in the tag side) Emissevt (changed adding pstarlepton to pleptonlabndl) (this is the CM Energy 4-vector magnitude of the event (upsilon(4s) mass) minus the Energies of the particles and gammas we see) Etotal (changed subtracting off pstarlepton to pleptonlabndl) (this is the total energy in the event, including both track energy and EMC energy) Modest (changed location of definition) (this is an indication if the decay was a D*) Npi0left (this is the extra pi0s left in an event) Numdl (the number of dlnu candidates in an event) Ptrkleft (added the d0mass to the momentum of the d0 in square and removed the kaon mass) (this is the kaon momentum in the event) R2all (this is the 2nd fox-wolfram moment of the event) Xmmiss (this is the sqrt of the difference in the momentum 4-vector length of the event calculated in the CM frame minus the Lab frame) Etotleft (this looks like the energy of the first gamma that isn t used in reconstructing the tag side of the event. Best to just use gammaclean.f to get exact use) Isoftpi (changed definition to make sense) (initially the index of the soft charged pion in the event) Marginal: Modenum (this is the decay mode of the tag side) Nemckl Ngamleft (this is the number of gammas left in the event after the used ones are removed) Numv0 (this is the number of BB vertex candidates in the event) Nusedgam (this is numer of gammas used to make the tag side of the event) Nusedtrk (this the number of charged tracks used in the tag side of the event) Get Rid of: Dpimdif (this is now always 0, it was commented out by bipul, I believe it is the mass of the composite particle of the kaon and pion in the event) Goodchrg (This makes sure the kaon and the lepton have opposite charge) Netq (this is the net charge of the event, not counting the signal side, we should maybe make this the net charge of the second side lepton, or rather the sum of the charges of the other tracks in the event) Ppileft (this is now always 0, it was originally a check of the pi momentum for an unaccounted for pion, but it has been commented out) Leptid (this is a MC truth variable looking if the lepton is an electron or muon) Trkid (this is 1 if the track passes Kaon checks, and 0 if it doesn t) Angtogam (this is the AngClosestTrackGam variable of the final charged track index in the event) I ve produced the 3rd version of the data double tag skim to be compared to Knunu MC. This version has the changes to the variables detailed in yesterdays report. The hbook file with all of the double tag skim cuts applied can be found at ~/david_new_double/hbooks/datadoublev3.hbook The comparison of the doubletag data with knunu mc can be found here. Today I shared my woes with the group at the weekly group meeting. Chishang had the great point that the particle substitutions don t have to be the same for each particle, so I m going to change the following particles the following ways and then reskim today: Emissevnt (instead of adding the lepton momentum to the missing energy, I ll add the d0 energy (mass^2+p^2) to the missing energy, this way the particles that do not go into this are closer in mass for the Knunu MC (a kaon) and double tag sample(a lepton)) Etotal (instead of subtracting out the plablepton, I m going to subtract out the energy of the d0, that way a lepton is seen in the double tag sample, compared to a kaon in the Knunu MC. This will have the problem though that the lepton has a >1.35 momentum cut on it) The output of these varaiables may be seen here. The to do list for the week is as follows: -Cut Flow table for the double tag sample to chase down the 22% discrepancy between data and MC. (done) -Look @ signal vs. background distribution for the dpimdif variable (add it back in...maybe see a peak at 140 MeV for the difference between D* and D0) -do the same for ppileft, angtogam, netq, numdl, and isoftpi -Add sqrt(md^2+pd^2)-sqrt(mk^2+pd^2) to Etotleft and subtract from Etotal (done, some still don t look good) -Look at distribution of first D and first lepton to compare to cosangkl..also look at 2D scatter plots of some variables to chase down this discrepancy -Plot 2nd cosby and 2d scatter plots of cosby s (did at meeting) -remake all plots substituting first side dl in place of second side dl -When reskim, store more variables - for R2All, recalculate without 2nd lepton, and correct for the mass of D -use xmmiss and emissevt to get pmiss and correct and rederive xmmiss2 I copied v4 of the secondtagvariable.f file to second_tag_variables.f.022207 to save that version before I make the changes we talked about in yesterday s meeting. I changed the etotal and emissevent and ptrkleft variables according to our prescriptions talked about yesterday. This skim will be version 5. These output photos may be found here. The etotal seems fixed, but emissevent has problems, and I screwed up with ptrkleft I m reskimming the MC to check when the discrepancies appear between data and MC. This will be version 5 MC in the david_new_double output directory, to compare with version 5 Data to chase down the discrepancy. I m also reskimming the data simultaneously in a separate directory called david_new_double_data This will be version 6 of the data. I ve made changes to ptrkleft and possibly changes to emissevent. To calculate the new R2all, look at the .nb file called r2all.nb at my hep.caltech site. I ve made the cut flow table for isolating the double tag sample. It may be found here. The data for version 6 of the code looked exactly like version 5, and still has a problem for emissevt and ptrkleft. These pictures may be seen here though. I ve created a new directory in which the code shall have the first tag (ie the  best tag based on our cosby optimization) as the signal and the second tag (ie the  worst tag) as the tag side. This directory on mercury is called david_new_double_firstside/ I ve begun skimming data with the necessary changes (topdl<->topdl2) here. I m starting a file that gets the new r2all distribution called getr2all.f in the david_new_double_data/ directory. Therefore I ve saved all of the old file up to this point  file name .f.022407 Today I looked at the first  first side variable distributions, and don t see any marked improvement in my variable distributions (specifically I was looking at cosangkl, which may even look worse). These distributions may be found here. Also I skimmed to see if I can re-calculate the r2all distribution. The .pat file that has this first attempt in it is in the david_new_double_data/output/datadouble_r2allrecalculated.pat. The new distribution versus the old one may be found here. Today I looked at the first version of the recalculated r2all variable and how it compares to knunu MC r2all. The results look good and can be seen here. I also, for the talk, made a distribution of etotleft in the signal region to illustrate the continued need for reweighting. It can be found here. I ve made my talk for the AWG, it can be found here After the Collab Meeting I have several things to consider and do: -I need to re-invoke the old variables and decide if they are worth keeping (dpimdif, angtogam, etc.) -It was suggested by Ilya that if I select cosby1 half the time and cosby2 half the time, I may be able to fix the cosby discrepency -I need to produce MC data comparisons that are both normalized to 1 since I see 85% agreement -I m trying to be able to submit all of my batch jobs at once because having to wait is annoying I ve produced new B+B MC and Knunu MC to compare whether or not I m selecting a real dlnu candidate according to MC truth. I ve applied all of the double tag cuts to the B+B MC, and none of the cuts to the Knunu MC. The .pat files may be found in ~/bipulcoderun1to4/output/knunu_truedl.pat ~/david_new_double_data/output/mc_truedl.pat Without any cuts on the Knunu MC, the ratio of truendl/falsendl is 8.59%, for the first tag side in B+B MC the ratio is 15.5961 % for the second tag this ratio is 16.0344%. IF we apply the d0mass cuts on the knunu MC, the pstarlep cut on the Knunu MC, and the ntrkleft.eq.1 cut on the knunu mc (done in paw with the knunu_truedl.hbook file) we see a ratio of: 3160/12470 = 25.34 % Need to ask at our next meeting if it s a problem that to apply the doubletag cuts we are applying cuts that don t exist in the normal knunu (numtrkleft.eq.1, pstarlep.gt.1.35, d0mass cuts)? By applying these cuts are we removing some correlations from the system? My bet is probably, but hopefully it won t matter. We can do the study with these cuts imposed, then remove these cuts and see how/if things change. In the david_new_double_data/ directory I m going to add plabd0dl(topdl2) to the stored variables. I ve changed the emissevent variable to have the momentum of the d0 in the center of mass frame when used in the energy of the d0 versus the energy if it were a Kaon. Maybe this will fix it. This will be version 7. Also in Version 7, I m going to take half cosby from 1 and half from 2. I moved the MC I used to check the truedl for the mc in the output of /david_new_double_data/ to the subdirectory of truedlmc, but first I screwed up run 1 B+B MC!!! I made pictures normalized to 1 between the data and MC for the variables from an early version of the code (version 2?) which may be found in david_new_double/pics_data_vs_mc_doubletags_normalized_to_1/ I got Cosby to work well with datadoublev7. Unfortunately the title of the variables is wrong, so in the datadoublev7.hbook file, cosby is actually called modenum. Either way, the result of selecting half cosby from tag side, and half from cosby second tag side can be seen here. Today I m now selecting the best tag as being half the first tag, and half the second, and applying this to all variables. This code release will be called version 8.
